No, typeswitch was introduced to XQuery by Phil Wadler (of Haskell fame), and honestly, I was  personally against it when I first saw it.

(I remember the scene like it was yesterday… and Phil got really angry with me…and Adam Bosworth who was sitting next to me...) 

We could thank  Phil that he was persistent and ignored us … :-)
